As of 2014, there are five telecoms that offer mobile connectivity for tourists. There’s not an obvious clear winner as far as coverage is concerned- sometimes it will be Metfone or Cellcard. Calls are cheap for both domestic and international. Mobile internet speeds vary, being faster in the cities and much slower away from them. You will need to show a passport to buy a SIM card. Be wary of street vendors offering SIM cards at a premium.
Top Prepaid SIM options
Cost: Sims are free to $5 USD, Top up $1 for 200 mbs, with $5 for 2,5 gb. Metfone does also offer a Mettravel sim for tourist, which gives you access to some English speaking directory services.
Cost: Sims are $1 USD, Top up $.50 for 250 mb daily, or $2 for 1 gb lasting one week. Cellcard’s tourist sim costs $5, and give you 1.5 gb lasting one month, plus favorable rates for international calls.
Cost: Sims are generally a few dollars, Top up $1 for a 300 mb data plan lasting one month.
Where to Buy: Anywhere, but buying at main offices is cheaper, as there is a premium charged to tourists in other outlets.
